Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt, she was finally admitted. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate.
